Chaos in Peru After Ouster of Populist President

Clashes between protesters and authorities following the removal of former Peru President Pedro Castillo have resulted in the deaths of two adolescents, The Guardian reported.

  • Castillo, a left-wing populist elected in July 2021, was impeached and arrested last week for trying to dissolve the country’s congress.
  • The civil unrest in Peru followed mass election fraud protests in Brazil last month by supporters of outgoing President Jair Bolsonaro, a right-wing populist.
