Here’s What Happened When the Biden Administration Was Asked to Define ‘Woman’

Multiple departments in President Biden’s administration refused to answer when asked by Fox News to define the term, “woman.”

SO WHAT

What used to be considered a pretty straightforward question is anything but these days.

WHAT HAPPENED

The Department of Justice, Department of Education, Department of Housing and Urban Development and the Federal Bureau of Prisons would not offer a definition, even in relation to language used by the agencies themselves, such as “women’s health,” Fox News reported Monday.

  • The National Institutes of Health, asked to define “woman” in relation to terms such as “women’s rights” and “women’s healthcare,” directed Fox News to the section on its website about “sex and gender.”
  • “‘Sex’ refers to biological differences between females and males, including chromosomes, sex organs, and endogenous hormonal profiles,” reads a post on the NIH site. “‘Gender’ refers to socially constructed and enacted roles and behaviors which occur in a historical and cultural context and vary across societies and over time.”
  • Asked by Fox News to on whether it defines “woman” based on gender or sex, the agency declined to comment further.

The NIH oversees the Office of Research on Women’s Health, which according to its website ensures “that women’s health research is part of the scientific framework at the NIH.”

WHAT IS A WOMAN?

Pushback against progressives’ push to redefine traditional notions of “woman” to include transgender women has come to a head in a variety of ways in recent weeks.

  • Ketanji Brown Jackson: Biden’s Supreme Court nominee made waves last month after declining to define the term “woman” during her confirmation hearing before the Senate.
  • USA Today: Conservatives mocked the media outlet for last month publishing an op-ed defending Jackson, claiming: “Scientists agree there is no sufficient way to clearly define what makes someone a woman.”
  • Matt Walsh: The Daily Wire contributor has spent the last few weeks teasing the release of a documentary and book, both entitled: “What Is a Woman?”
  • Conservative Political Action Committee: In a video released this week by CPAC 2022, conservative activist Coleton Furlow is seen asking passersby in Washington D.C. to define “woman.”
