Democratic voters have increasingly stopped caring about illegal immigration even as the problem’s gotten worse than ever, a new Gallup poll found.
SO WHAT
Liberals keep moving the goal posts in the culture wars.
THE NUMBERS
While the number of Republican voters who say they are “very worried” about illegal immigration has spiked to nearly 70%, less than 20% of Democrats feel the same, according to the poll released last Tuesday.
The partisan gap has grown gradually: In January 2001, Republicans (29%) and Democrats (27%) were roughly equally alarmed about foreigners entering the country without authorization.
- But — despite a border crisis and record levels of migration to the U.S. in 2020 and 2021 — the percentage of Democrats who are “very worried” about the issue has only risen two points.
- Meanwhile, the rate of concern among Republicans had jumped 20%.
Other survey data has shown Democrats shifting leftward over the past 30 years, especially on race and immigration.
- “The temptation to reduce every normie concern about immigration to ‘white supremacy’ was too hard to eschew. And the view that ‘All Borders Are Racist’ — as perfect an expression of woke extremism as ‘Defund the Police’ and ‘Pregnant People’ — became an elite cause. Nation-states and borders? That has been left in the dust of the Obama era,” political commentator Andrew Sullivan wrote in an October analysis.
THE POLITICIANS
President Biden campaigned in 2020 on reforming then-President Trump’s “unrelenting assault on our values and our history as a nation of immigrants.”
- Since taking office, Biden has worked to undo several of Trump’s immigration policies, including the “Remain in Mexico” program, on humanitarian grounds.
- On Monday, a federal judge temporarily blocked the Biden administration’s attempt to end Title 42, a Trump-era public health policy that allowed many migrants to be turned away at the border.
