QUOTE OF THE DAY: CNN Reporter Disappointed By Americans’ Love of French Fries

Journalist Stephen Collinson lamented in an analysis published Thursday by CNN that the public may be more concerned about the price of French fries “than the price of democratic freedoms.”

THE QUOTE

In an essay titled, “Voters may care more about the cost of French fries than January 6 panel’s compelling evidence,” Collinson bemoaned polling showing Americans’ top concern is the economy.

  • A more worthy object of their attention, Collinson argued, is the outcome of the House select committee investigation into former President Donald Trump’s alleged involvement in the Jan. 6 Capitol attack.
  • According to Collinson, the committee “long ago dropped the notion of being a narrowly focused quest for the facts,” and its members now “use their probe to try to defend democracy in its intensifying struggle with Donald Trump.”
  • And while the Jan. 6 hearings have “transfixed” Washington insiders, the rest of the country has been relatively unmoved by the committee members’ noble struggle against a “mortal threat to free elections.”

As Collinson put it: “Often, voters only realize that their democracy is dying is when it’s too late.”
