QUOTE OF THE DAY: “Daylight Saving Time sheds light on lack of sleep’s disproportionate impact in communities of color”

CNN health reporter Jacqueline Howard reported Friday that the real problem with Daylight Savings Time is that it’s racist.

  • “Many social and environmental determinants of health – including living conditions or work schedules that don’t support sleep – may emerge, at least in part, from historical and persistent forms of structural racism,” Howard wrote, noting that some clinical research has found that sleep loss — such as that caused by Daylight Savings Time shifts — disproportionately affects black and Hispanic Americans.
  • Daylight savings time joins other unlikely loci of systemic racism, including swimming and being on time.
