CNN health reporter Jacqueline Howard reported Friday that the real problem with Daylight Savings Time is that it’s racist.
- “Many social and environmental determinants of health – including living conditions or work schedules that don’t support sleep – may emerge, at least in part, from historical and persistent forms of structural racism,” Howard wrote, noting that some clinical research has found that sleep loss — such as that caused by Daylight Savings Time shifts — disproportionately affects black and Hispanic Americans.
- Daylight savings time joins other unlikely loci of systemic racism, including swimming and being on time.
