Georgia Democratic gubernatorial candidate Stacey Abrams claimed the concept of fetal heartbeats had been “manufactured” to deprive women of their right to choose.
THE QUOTE
“There is no such thing as a heartbeat at six weeks,” Abrams said during a panel at Ray Charles Performing Arts Center in Atlanta, Georgia.
“It is a manufactured sound designed to convince people that men have the right to take control of a woman’s body,” she added.
- Abrams has been a vocal opponent of GOP “heartbeat bills,” which restrict abortion after fetal heartbeats can be detected.
- Until recently, Planned Parenthood and other pro-choice groups characterized the cardiac activity picked up by ultrasound technology as a “heartbeat.”
