Hip-hop artist Kanye West remained defiant in the face of backlash over him wearing a “White Lives Matter” T-shirt earlier this week at a fashion show in Paris.
THE QUOTE
“The answer to why I wrote ‘White lives matter’ on a shirt is because they do. It’s the obvious thing,” West told Fox News host Tucker Carlson during an interview that aired last night.
- When Carlson asked why he thought the statement was controversial, West said, “Because the same people that have stripped us of our identity and labelled us as a color have told us what it means to be black and the vernacular that we’re supposed to have.”
- In the wide-ranging interview, West also addressed abortion, announcing that he is “pro-life,” and plus-size pop star Lizzo, whom he said the media is using as a tool to encourage the “genocide of the black race.”
