QUOTE OF THE DAY: Stacey Abrams Weighs In on Theology

Democratic Georgia gubernatorial candidate Stacey Abrams recently told supporters there is no biblical justification for opposing abortion and being “pro-life” is just about “cruelty and meanness.”

THE QUOTE

Speaking July 30 at church in Woodstock, Georgia, Abrams — who considered herself anti-abortion before her entry into politics — claimed that, as the daughter of Methodist preachers, she has special insight into teachings on abortion.

“I was trained to read and understand the Bible, and I will tell you this, there is nothing about the decision to eliminate access to abortion care that is grounded in anything other than cruelty and meanness,” Abrams said in footage that resurfaced online this week.

  • She described Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp, the Republican she is running to unseat, as a “hard right religious extremist who has decided that he knows better than any woman about her body and has decided to make women second-class citizens in the state of Georgia in the year of our Lord 2022.”
  • Kemp signed a law in 2019 that bans abortion after a fetal heartbeat can be detected.

OK, BUT

Anti-abortion advocates point to a variety of passages in the Bible — as well as other early Christian documents — that treat life in the womb as sacred.
