AMERICAN PRISONER STILL TRAPPED IN RUSSIA SPEAKS OUT
Paul Whelan, a former U.S. Marine who was sentenced to 16 years in Russian prison in 2020, told CNN on Thursday he is “greatly disappointed that more has not been done to secure my release, especially as the four year anniversary of my arrest is coming up.”
- Hours earlier, President Joe Biden had announced WNBA star Brittney Griner was released as part of a prisoner swap for Russian arms dealer Viktor Bout, aka the “Merchant of Death,” who was convicted of conspiring to kill Americans.
TWITTER EMPLOYEES ACKNOWLEDGED LIBSOFTIKTOK BANS WERE UNJUSTIFIED
A Twitter committee in charge of moderating high-profile accounts “acknowledged” the influential LibsofTikTok account did not violate the site’s hateful conduct policy, despite being banned numerous times for allegedly violating the policy, according to internal company documents published Friday by journalist Bari Weiss.
- “While LTT has not directly engaged in behavior violative of the Hateful Conduct policy, the user has continued targeting individuals/allies/supporters of the LGBTQIA+ community for alleged misconduct,” Twitter employees said in an October memo.
TREVOR NOAH’S TEARFUL FINAL DAILY SHOW
Trevor Noah signed off as “The Daily Show” host for the final time Thursday night.
- Noah, who replaced Jon Stewart as host of the Comedy Central news satire show seven years ago, used his emotional farewell address to pay tribute to black women like his mother and grandmother.
- “If you truly want to learn about America, you talk to black women,” he said. “Because unlike everybody else, black women can’t afford to fuck around and find out. Black people understand how hard it is, when things go bad, especially in America, but any place that black people exist.”
IRAN HANGS PROTESTER
Iran announced Thursday it had executed Mohsen Shekari, 23, a man arrested for participating in the months-long protests against the government’s treatment of women, state media reported.
- The regime alleged Shekari had blocked a street in Tehran and attacked a member of Iran’s paramilitary force with a machete.
- Eleven protesters have so far been sentenced to death by the government, but Shekari is the first to be executed.
