There’s a Selfie Controversy at the U.S.-Mexico Border

Migrants illegally entering the United States are taking selfies to mark their border crossings, according to Fox News.

SO WHAT

It seems like migrants aren’t taking America’s border laws seriously.

WHAT HAPPENED

Fox News reporters documented the selfie-snappers while covering a House Oversight Committee delegation that toured the U.S.-Mexico border Monday and Tuesday.https://streamable.com/e/6k3kzt

The migrants were part of a group of hundreds of migrants waiting in Border Patrol custody for buses to transport them away from the border.

  • According to National Border Patrol Council president Brandon Judd, the photos are used by cartels to advertise their border-smuggling services.
  • “They use them to show everybody, ‘See? Look. Look how easy it was,’” Judd told Fox News. “‘These people are happy. Pay me $1,000, and you can be happy, as well.”

WHY IS THIS HAPPENING?

House Oversight Committee ranking member Jamie Comer, R-Ky., said the selfie situation is further proof that President Biden’s immigration policies are encouraging migrants to disrespect America’s laws.

  • “That shows a lack of fear. They’re breaking the law, they’re here illegally,” Comer told Fox News. “But yet they’re taking selfies on their Apple phones with their Louis Vuitton purses and Nike shoes, and they’re ready to be escorted to their next visit.”
  • “There are no consequences with the Biden administration, and that’s only going to lead to more illegals coming into the United States, which leads to more drugs and more crime and more human trafficking,” he added.
  • Judd said cartels exploit U.S. immigration law, telling prospective customers, “cross the border illegally, you’re still going to get released. Pay us thousands of dollars, we will get you there. And then we will teach you what you need to say in order to get released.”

In early April, Biden announced the end of Title 42, a public health policy that allowed many migrants to be turned away at the border.

MEANWHILE

A group of illegal immigrants apprehended at Texas’ southern border arrived by bus in Washington, D.C., Wednesday.

The migrants were sent by Texas Gov. Greg Abbott in response to the Biden administration’s lifting of Title 42.

  • “By busing migrants to Washington, D.C., the Biden Administration will be able to more immediately meet the needs of the people they are allowing to cross our border,” Abbott said in a statement Wednesday.
  • A second busload of migrants is on the way, he added.
