Former President Donald Trump appeared to announce Saturday that he is running for reelection again in 2024.
SO WHAT
He’s got good reasons to think he will win.
THE MOMENT
Before a cheering crowd of supporters at the Conservative Political Action Conference in Orlando, Florida, Trump said more directly than ever before that he plans to be the next GOP presidential nominee.
“They’re going to find out the hard way starting on Nov. 8 and then again, even more so, on November 2024, they will find out like never before,” he said, referring to the dates of the midterms and 2024 elections.
- “We did it twice, and we’ll do it again,” Trump added, referencing his claims that the 2020 election was “rigged” and “stolen” from him. “We’re going to be doing it again, a third time.”
- While Ron DeSantis has generated considerable buzz as a potential GOP alternative to Trump in 2024, Trump has repeatedly trounced the Florida governor in polls.
- In Sunday’s CPAC straw poll, DeSantis got 28% of the vote, less than half of Trump’s 59%.
BIDEN WATCH
Democratic strategists have expressed concerns about a rematch between Trump and President Joe Biden, whose approval ratings have been dismal as America has lurched from crisis to crisis.
- “Maybe Biden would beat him,” South Carolina-based strategist China Dickerson told Insider last week. “I think the turnout would be even lower, and because turnout would be lower we’d have a problem.”
- Real Clear Politics’ polling average has Trump up on Biden by 3.7 points.
